October 15, 2026
Every year on the third Thursday of October, credit unions around the world pause to celebrate something simple but powerful: people helping people. This year, International Credit Union (ICU) Day falls on Thursday, October 15, 2026, and we’re celebrating the people who make it all possible: you, our members!
Why We Celebrate
ICU Day is a chance to recognize what credit unions stand for: community, cooperation, and care for one another. It’s a day to reflect on the difference a member-owned financial institution can make in the lives of individuals and families, and to say thank you to the members who are the reason we exist.
That spirit of ohana and looking out for one another is something we live every day. ICU Day gives us a moment to celebrate it together.

A Brief History of ICU Day
Credit unions got their start in the 1800s, when ordinary people in Europe came together to solve a problem that banks weren’t solving for them. Pioneers like Friedrich Raiffeisen and Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch in Germany helped farmers, artisans, and working families pool their resources and lend to one another at fair rates. Their idea spread across the Atlantic when Alphonse Desjardins opened the first credit union in North America in Quebec in 1900. It took root in the United States soon after, helped along by leaders such as Edward Filene and Roy Bergengren, who championed the cooperative approach to everyday finance.
As the movement grew, credit union leaders wanted a way to honor its shared purpose. International Credit Union Day was first celebrated in 1948 and has been observed on the third Thursday of October ever since. Today it is recognized in credit unions in more than 100 countries, and it brings together a global community of members who are connected by the same belief: finances work better when people work together.
People Helping People
At the heart of every credit union is a philosophy that has guided the movement from the start: people helping people.
Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives owned by the members they serve. There are no outside shareholders to answer to, and earnings go back to members through better rates, lower fees, and improved services. Every member has a voice, and every decision is made with the community’s well-being in mind.
That’s what sets a credit union apart. We aren’t here to maximize profit. We’re here to help you reach your goals, whether that’s buying your first home, saving for your keiki’s future, building your credit, or getting through a tough season.
Thank you for being part of the Maui County FCU family. We can’t wait to celebrate with you!
