  • Roth IRA contributions are subject to IRS income limits that phase out eligibility at higher income levels

  • Traditional IRA tax deductibility may be reduced or eliminated if you or your spouse are covered by a workplace retirement plan, depending on income

  • Withdrawals from either IRA type before age 59½ are generally subject to a 10% IRS early withdrawal penalty, plus any income tax owed, with some IRS-defined exceptions

  • For a Roth IRA, withdrawing your original contributions is generally not penalized, but withdrawing earnings before age 59½ and before the account is 5 years old is

Membership is a Maui County FCU lending requirement.

Yes, we can help you with refinancing your mortgage, auto loan, and personal loans.

A HELOC (Home Equity Line of Credit) lets you borrow money using your home's equity as collateral. Think of it like a credit card, but backed by your house — you can borrow, repay, and borrow again, up to a set limit.

How much can I borrow?

It depends on your home's value and how much you still owe on your mortgage. Most lenders let you borrow up to 80–85% of your home's value, minus your remaining mortgage balance.

How does repayment work?

A HELOC has two stages:

  1. Draw period (usually 5–10 years): Borrow what you need, when you need it. Often you only pay interest during this time.

  2. Repayment period (usually 10–20 years): You stop borrowing and start paying back both principal and interest — so payments typically go up.

Are the interest rates fixed?

Usually not. Most HELOCs have variable rates, meaning your payment can go up or down over time. Some lenders offer a fixed-rate option.

What can I use a HELOC for?

Common uses include home renovations, debt consolidation, large unexpected expenses, or having funds available for emergencies.

We offer share-secured loans and credit cards to help you build your credit.

Membership FAQs

You are eligible to become a member of Maui County FCU if you live, work or go to school in the County of Maui (Maui, Molokai, Lanai), or if you are the immediate family member (grandparent, parent, stepparent, stepsibling, sibling, child, stepchild or grandchild) of a member or potential member.

Unexpired US government issued ID such as a driver’s license or passport, and original birth certificate.

Since credit unions are owned by their members rather than shareholders, when you deposit money into a basic savings account, you're technically purchasing a "share" of the credit union. That's what makes you a member-owner with voting rights (like electing the board), not just a customer. Often there's a small minimum deposit (e.g., $5–$25) required to open a share account, and that minimum balance is what establishes and maintains your membership.

Credit unions are owned by their members, not by outside shareholders. When you open an account, you technically become a member-owner. Profits get returned to members — through lower loan rates, higher savings rates, lower fees, or dividends — rather than paid out to external investors.

Yes, if you are the immediate family member (grandparent, parent, stepparent, stepsibling, sibling, child, stepchild or grandchild) of a member or potential member.

No, as long as a minimum of $5 is maintained in an account.

A credit union is similar to a non-profit organization, however it is a not-for-profit and does aim to generate a financial surplus each year because it needs capital reserves, has to cover operating costs, etc.), but that surplus isn't distributed to outside shareholders — it's used for the benefit of members and the institution's stability. That's why they're more precisely called "not-for-profit" rather than pure nonprofits.

Share Certificates FAQs

$1,000.00 to open, and $1,000.00 must remain in the certificate for the full term to earn the disclosed APY.

An early withdrawal penalty applies.

The certificate renews automatically by default if no action is taken. You can renew it for another term, transfer the funds to another account, or withdraw the cash — manageable through online or mobile banking.

A share certificate is the credit union equivalent of a bank certificate of deposit (CD) — a savings product where you lock away money for a set period in exchange for a guaranteed, typically higher, dividend rate.

How it works

  • You deposit a lump sum for a fixed term — common terms range from 3 months to 5 years.

  • The rate is locked in for that term, so you know exactly what you'll earn, regardless of what happens with rates elsewhere in that time.

  • In exchange for locking your money up, share certificates generally pay higher dividends (the credit union term for interest) than a regular share savings account.

  • At maturity (when the term ends), you get your original deposit back plus the dividends earned. Most credit unions let you choose to withdraw the funds, roll them into a new certificate, or add more money and renew.

Key features

  • Minimum deposit: Often $500–$1,000 to open, though this varies by credit union.

  • Early withdrawal penalty: If you take money out before the term ends, you'll typically forfeit some dividends — often a set number of months' worth, depending on the term length.

  • Fixed dividend rate: Unlike a share savings account (where rates can float), the rate on a certificate is locked for the full term.

  • NCUA insured: Just like share savings accounts, certificates are insured up to $250,000 per depositor, per institution.

Why people use them

  • Safer, predictable place to grow money you don't need immediate access to

  • Often used for short-to-medium-term savings goals (a house down payment, a wedding, etc.)

  • A way to earn more than a regular savings account without taking on stock-market risk

A fee is incurred for early withdrawal.

Solar Loans FAQs

The maximum loan amount is $75,000, subject to approval.

The rate is fixed for the life of the loan, similar to a Personal Loan, rather than adjusting over time. Terms of up to 10 years are available.

  • Hawaii residency.

VA Mortgage FAQs

A VA funding fee of 2.15% or 2.40% applies, depending on your military service history, and can be rolled into your financing instead of paid upfront. Closing costs are capped by federal law. Beyond the funding fee, specific closing cost figures and any origination fee are {ADD FINAL CONTENT HERE!]

No down payment is required; eligible borrowers can finance 100% of the purchase price. VA Loans are limited to primary residences, and maximum loan amounts apply.

You can choose either a fixed-rate VA Loan, where the rate is locked for the full term, or an adjustable-rate VA Loan, where the rate is fixed for an initial period and then adjusts based on market conditions.

  • Meet VA eligibility requirements as a veteran, active-duty service member, or eligible surviving spouse, and hold a valid Certificate of Eligibility.

  • Purchase a primary residence; VA Loans aren't available for investment properties or second homes.

  • Meet Maui County FCU's credit and underwriting approval standards.

Youth Account FAQs

No, there are no service fees for the Kids Club or Teen account.

$5.00 to open either account and a balance of $100.00 or more is needed to earn any interest.

A parent or guardian must provide, at account opening:

  • The child's or teen's original Social Security card

  • The child's or teen's original birth certificate (not required if they have a valid, unexpired government-issued ID)

  • Submit the report card showing the ME or A grade within one month of the report card date

  • Submit an actual report card — progress reports are not eligible

The child must:

  • Deposit funds in person at a branch

  • Be physically present to receive and redeem tokens

Neither account earns cash back. The Kids Club Account has no debit card, so there are no rewards points to earn. Teen accounts with a checking account and debit card earn debit card rewards points.

Kids Club (newborn–12) includes tokens, a piggy bank, and coin-counting machines. Teen (13–17) includes a free debit card and the Zogo drawing instead. Both pay the same interest on balances over $100.00, have free coin machine access, and the same grade rewards.

At 13, they are automatically rolled over to a Teen Account.
