90 year history

Here for the local HI community.

We live by the concept of ohana

We're all connected, all part of our Maui County, HI community. Those ideas guide the operations of Maui County FCU. We're not a faceless institution owned by some far-off investors. We're a not-for-profit company with deep roots in the community, run by members of the community.

A history built on 'ohana, not shareholders

In late 1936, a group of Maui County government employees, working with a representative from the Hawaii Credit Union League, set out to establish a credit union for their fellow employees. On December 16, 1936, they filed an application to organize and operate a federal credit union under the name Maui County Employees FCU. On January 4, 1937, that application was approved, and the credit union was chartered as a segment-based institution under Charter Number 1866.

Ten charter members made that founding possible:

  • E.R. Bevins

  • J.P. Cockett

  • Wendell F. Crockett

  • John F. Caires

  • Charles M. Mamuoha

  • Benjamin Kaiuwailani

  • William Akee

  • Frank Teshima

  • Rogers Akiu

  • Walter D. Martin

1960-1991

In 1960, Harumi Fujii became Manager, leading a credit union with just two employees. Under his leadership, the credit union opened its Aupuni Street location in July 1976 and continued to grow for three more decades. When Fujii retired in 1991, Gary Fukuroku succeeded him as Manager, taking the helm of a credit union with nine employees serving 5,398 members.

1998-2015

By February 1998, growth had accelerated leading to the need for a larger location at Wili Pa Loop to serve 7,347 members and manage $57,115,813 in assets. In 2009, the credit union changed its name from Maui County Employees FCU to Maui County FCU, reflecting a field of membership that had already expanded to include all county, state, and federal employees. The Kahului branch followed in April 2010, opening inside Maui Marketplace.

2016

In February 2016, Maui County FCU converted to a community charter, extending membership eligibility beyond government employees to anyone who lives, learns, works, or worships within Maui County. The change was marked with a new logo: a ti leaf lei woven into a single continuous shape that traces both the outline of the island of Maui and the infinity symbol — representing welcome and ongoing care extended to the whole community, without end.

2017

On September 1, 2017, Maui County FCU merged with West Maui Community FCU. The merger reflected Maui County FCU's ongoing mission to help Maui County families build stable financial futures, and gave west and central Maui communities access to expanded services and financial opportunities across three branch locations: Kahului, Wailuku, and Lahaina.

90 year history

Today, that 90-year history adds up to a credit union serving more than 20,000 members with over $450 million in assets. But our focus hasn't changed since 1937: whenever you need financial services and assistance, our attention is solely on you.
